The Funk Excursion celebrates Women’s History Month with a tribute to one of music’s Funkiest Females- Patrice Rushen!

With a career spanning over 40 years, and 7 top 40 R&B albums, 5 top 10 R&B hits, and 1 top 10 Pop song to her credit, Patrice Rushen is considered one of the most durable artists of the her era. Her album, ‘Straight From the Heart’, is among the 200 best albums of the 80s.

Patrice was a child prodigy, playing the piano at three years old. She was signed to the Prestige label at the age of 20, and recorded with the likes of Joe Henderson, Lee Ritenour, Al McKay, Donald Byrd, just to name a few. Her recording career spans Jazz, Funk, R&B, and Pop. A multi-Grammy nominated artist, Patrice transitioned from a recording a solo career to film/tv composer, and is credited in over 24 productions. She was the first woman in 43 years to serve as musical director the Emmy Awards, the first woman MD for the Grammy Awards and the NAACP Image Awards, and the ONLY woman to act as MD for a late night talk show, and the Peoples Choice Awards.

It was tough, but I think I’ve selected the tracks that best represent her tremendous range, depth, development and overall appeal as musician, composer, arranger and popular artist. Look up and Enjoy!!
