The Funk Excursion Celebrates One Year!

I can’t believe it’s been a year since The Funk Excursion first aired on WCSU FM.
Who knew that the show was debuting during one of the most monumental years in Funk…

The year started off on Labor Day Weekend, 2017, with me traveling from Philly ALL THE WAY to Central State University, in Xenia, Ohio (just outside of Dayton) to do a Live Broadcast of my first show from the WCSU FM studio. My first guests were legendary Dayton radio personality Dr. Turk Logan, David Webb, founder of The Funk Music Hall of Fame and Exhibition Center, and Grammy Award winner K. Harrison, formerly of FAZE-O, Heatwave and the Dazz Band, who debuted his new CD on the show.
General Manager, Dr. Robert Franklin, Tony Chappel, Trent Darby, Romeo Reese and the entire staff at WCSUFM were GREAT, and worked with me every step of the way.

A few week later, I was on the road again, traveling to NYC to catch up with Bootsy Collins at the exclusive signing party for his latest release, ‘World Wide Funk Drive’. If you don’t know by now, the album is DOPE, so definitely get some WWFD in your life!

I debuted my audio series, “The Evolution of Funk”, with retrospectives on Afrobeat, Disco, Techno/Electro Funk and Go-Go, and featured artists Parliament-Funkadelic, Earth, Wind and Fire, and of course, the God Father, James Brown. Much more to come on that series in the coming year and beyond.

Then, it was back to Ohio for the Grand Opening of The Funk Music Hall of Fame and Exhibition Center, in the city of Dayton – known as the “Land of Funk”.

Funk Center Founder, David Webb, K. Harrison, and a HOST of Dayton Funk dignitaries from the Ohio Players, Slave, Faze-O, Sun, and more were on-hand for the celebration.

2018 was a HUGE year for Funk. Parliament’s first new music in almost 40 years- the single, “I’m Gon’ Make You Sick (of Me)”, dropped in January, 2018, and George Clinton announced the impending release of a new Parliament album. (Listen to Show#21 “It’s A P-Funk Party” featuring “I’m Gon’ Make You Sick (of Me)’)

I was in da house when P-Funk rolled through Philly,

George Clinton in concert with Parliament-Funkadelic at the Keswick in Glenside, PA
Clinton with Sir Nose (aka Carlos MC Murray, and Tracey “Trey Lewd” Lewis

and had the pleasure of meeting 2nd Generation P-Funker Garrett Shider, Jr., a humble guy who, in my opinion, AND judging from his Awesom CD, “Hand Me Down Diapers”, is the heir apparent to the “P”.

The summer of 2018 saw the return of great Funk artists to center stage, with the much-anticipated release of Parliament’s ‘Medicaid Fraud Dogg’ album, in May 2018.

Chaka Kahn’s surprise single “Like Sugar”, her first in 10 years, dropped in July, along with Tower of Power’s 50th Anniversary release, “The Soul Side of Town”. Last but certainly not least, George Clinton announced his plans to retire from touring in 2019.Chaka-Like Suga
